Mississippi
(DVD)
In this musical comedy set in the Old South, Bing Crosby
plays a singer from Philadelphia named Tom Grayson who is
engaged to marry Southern heiress, Elvira Rumford (Gail
Patrick). When his rival, Major Patterson (John Miljan),
challenges him to a duel for Elvira’s hand, Tom refuses
to fight and is branded a coward by the girl’s father. Disgraced,
he takes a job performing on a riverboat piloted by the
blustery Commodore Orlando Jackson (W.C. Fields) where he
is billed ironically as “The Singing Killer.” Mississippi
was loosely based on Booth Tarkington’s play, Magnolia.
Contains the first #1 song to ever appear on an American
